Heifers/Cows

Because we wean throughout most of the year, we usually have 10-30 purebred heifers for sale during the year. They will range from weaning age to about 18 months. The majority of them are white but, occasionally, some have a little color. They will be calfhood vaccinated and dehorned if not polled.

We have a number of open and bred cows and cow/calf pairs for sale as well. They range in age from second-calf heifers to “oldies but goodies”. Prices for individuals and pairs will be higher than market price and vary according to age and condition. Prices for groups will be discounted.

Bulls

All bulls must meet the following criteria in order to qualify as herd bulls at the Michaelis Ranch:

1. He must be born unassisted.
2. He must have a strong survival instinct---be up on his feet and nursing quickly. Short "GTU".
3. He must be from a very broody, highly fertile cow with a nice, neat “beef cow” udder and teats, that is “thrifty”, an easy keeper, and who is structurally sound in every way with a strong mothering instinct.
4. He can never have been sick---any animal that becomes sick is treated then culled.
5. He must be of excellent quality with eye appeal and be structurally sound with correct hooves and set to his hind legs, a good tight sheath, and even testicles of normal size that hang down sufficiently but that are not so large as to “dangle” and be damaged in hot weather. He must have a very thrifty appearance, demonstrate every masculine characteristic of a highly fertile bull, and is expected to move freely and easily as if every joint is well lubricated.
6. He must be able to breed 50 cows per season with ease without losing vigor or “going off”.
7. He must be linebred in order to have predictability and uniformity.
8. He must be genetically free of any lethal gene.

Size isn’t as important as quality and efficiency. If he is good enough, then he is big enough. His bottom line is predictability and profitability for the commercial operator and quality meat for the consumer.
